A Legacy of Love for Animals

Nancy’s love for animals was not simply a passion — it was the very heart of who she was. In 2009, she turned that love into something extraordinary by founding Happy Tails Animal Sanctuary, a dedicated animal rescue sanctuary on her 400-acre property in Paris, Kentucky. What began as a horse rescue quickly grew into a full animal rescue organization, providing a safe haven where neglected, abandoned, and at-risk animals could find healing, rehabilitation, and lifelong care.

Nancy never saw animals as “rescues” — she saw them as lives worth saving. Her work in animal welfareanimal rehabilitation, and pet rescue was rooted in compassion, patience, and an unwavering belief in second chances. Whether she was caring for abused horses, rescuing dogs in need of adoption, or working tirelessly to restore trust in animals that had been mistreated, Nancy approached every situation with heart and purpose.

Nancy’s vision grew beyond a single sanctuary into a multi-location mission of compassion. With the expansion to Woodstock, Illinois, Happy Tails Animal Sanctuary became a trusted refuge for animals in need across both Kentucky and Illinois. Her goal was simple yet powerful — to ensure that every abandoned, neglected, or at-risk animal could find safety, care, and a forever home.

Creating a World Where Every Animal is Safe and Loved

Nancy’s mission was rooted in action and driven by heart. Alongside Lance and many others, she dedicated her life to rescuing animals from the most difficult circumstances — especially draft horses, often discarded after years of labor. From livestock auctions to kill pens, their efforts gave countless animals a second chance at life through proper care, nutrition, and rehabilitation.

Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Rehome with Compassion

Although Nancy did not have children of her own, she filled her life with the animals she rescued. They were her family — each one cared for with unconditional love, dedication, and a deep sense of responsibility. Her sanctuary was not just a place of rescue, but a home where animals were given dignity, safety, and a future.

Today, Nancy Harney’s legacy continues through the lives she saved and the awareness she brought to animal rescue, animal adoption, and animal welfare advocacy. Happy Tails Animal Sanctuary stands as a lasting symbol of her compassion — a place where second chances are real, and where her mission to protect and care for animals will live on for generations.
